Founder of abusive Teen Challenge ministry predicts imminent 'earth shattering calamity'

ABC Action News - March 9, 2009

NEW YORK, NY -- A well-known New York pastor claims he has been compelled by the Holy Spirit to send out an urgent message about an imminent and 'earth shattering calamity.'

David Wilkerson told readers of his blog on Saturday that the calamity would be centered in New England, and then spread across the country, and around the world, part of what he sees as judgment from God.

"An earth-shattering calamity is about to happen," he writes. "It is going to be so frightening, we are all going to tremble – even the godliest among us."

Wilkerson's vision includes fires raging through New York City.

"It will engulf the whole megaplex, including areas of New Jersey and Connecticut. Major cities all across America will experience riots and blazing fires – such as we saw in Watts, Los Angeles, years ago," he writes.

Wilkerson is the founder of a national teen ministry called Teen Challenge. [read an expose of that ministry on this blog] He is also the author of the book, "The Cross and the Switchblade."

"There will be riots and fires in cities worldwide," he writes. "There will be looting – including Times Square, New York City. What we are experiencing now is not a recession, not even a depression. We are under God’s wrath. In Psalm 11 it is written, "If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?"

Wilkerson has since posted a new blog entry to explain his reason for sharing this message. On Monday morning, he said his goal was not to insight panic.

"I was led in a practical way to lay aside a month’s supply of food - because I have witnessed the panic in the wake of terrorism," he wrote.

"I do not know when these things will come to pass, but I know it is not far off. I have unburdened my soul to you. Do with the message as you choose."
